The Story Behind Flow Designs, a Design Studio and Event Space in Reno

Last updated:

You may know the saying, “Reno loves Reno” – and if you don’t, it’s tried and true here in Northern Nevada. Nevada Moms loves supporting local businesses especially those ran by local mamas, like Flow Designs!

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with two local mamas, sisters, and owners of Flow Designs, Kristen and Katie to talk about how their backgrounds (in interior design and hospitality) led them to opening Flow Designs and they shared the multiple services they offer and bring to our community!

The Backstory

Kristen and Katie are sisters who grew up in Truckee, CA.  They both now live in Reno with their families and love working together.

Kristen

After college and traveling the world, Kristen settled down with her family in Reno.  Kristen had always dreamed of opening up a design studio.  A lot of her passion comes from her mother who passed away while she was in college.

Katie

After high school, Katie lived in NY and worked in the spa industry as a massage therapist and manager for over 17 years.  You will often see Katie behind the scenes managing the business operations and helping with designs.

Flow Designs

In 2019, the two sisters opened up Flow Designs Studio. The Studio is located at 129 Bell Street in Reno Nevada in an old Victorian home.

The house has been updated to serve as the design studio and event space called Flows Boutique Venue.

At Flow Designs, both the design studio and venue focus on goods that are sustainable, functional, and purposeful.  One main goal they have is to promote and carry environmentally friendly goods.

In the past few years, they completely renovated their kitchen and backyard to create an intimate indoor and outdoor event space called The Backyard!

The Backyard can be rented for private events that can accommodate up to 50 people, inside can accommodate up to 20 people comfortably. This is the perfect event space for a baby shower, bridal shower, intimate settings, birthdays, etc.

Sip and Shop

They love to partner with fellow business owners to host Sip and Shops.  These events are hosted in The Backyard.  It’s a fun way to get out and shop from your favorite local vendors!

I went to their last sip and shop and loved having a glass of champagne while checking out the other vendor booths, including some I hadn’t had the opportunity to meet. I left with goodies from Flow Designs and a few other vendors!

Giving Back to the Community

As I mentioned above, Flow Designs is in a Victorian home built in 1924.  The home still had its original door and knob when they purchased the building.  The door was donated and the golden knob remained.

The sisters knew they wanted to give back to the community, but didn’t know exactly how until this knob kept showing up around the studio. Thus the idea of “The Golden Knob” came to life. An idea based around showing up and touching people’s lives.

The Golden Knob

The Golden Knob is a give-back program they started to help people in our community who may need some “flow in their life”.  People have nominated individuals who have been impacted by events or circumstances.

They have been able to help families who have lost a loved one, single parents with minimal home furnishings, and other individuals. Learn more about The Golden Knob here.

Supporting our Local Businesses

I had a great time sitting down with Kristen and Katie.  Their passion behind Flow Designs truly shines and you can see how much they enjoy being a part of the local community.

If you haven’t been to Flow Designs yet, we encourage you to go check it out or consider the event space for her next event!

We love to support small businesses especially those who continually give back to our local community.

Thank you to Flow Designs for sponsoring this post on The Story Behind Flow Designs, a Design Studio, Boutique and Event Space in Reno. As always all thoughts and opinions are my own. Read our disclosure.
