Do you know an expectant mom? Is her due date approaching and you’re wondering what gift you could give that is useful and thoughtful? I have some creative gift ideas for a new mom and newborn that are sure to be appreciated!
These gifts are designed to be beneficial in the first few months of caring for a newborn. I’ve gathered ideas for comforting, helpful, soothing, practical and tried-and-true gifts and services that can make all the difference!
Comfortable Postpartum Apparel
The 4th trimester. What an amazing and all-encompassing challenging time this is. Baby’s first three months of life outside the womb is a whirlwind of new experiences!
These are comforting apparel gifts I recommend for a new mom that will nurture and be used daily. Time is spent nursing, bonding and awake with the baby every few hours. Sleep deprivation will prevail, but you can give her a gift that will be warm, comfortable, and look cute.
Nursing Nightgown and Robe Set. Jersey knit fabric for sleepwear is great for spending a lot of time nursing in bed or glider. This fabric is soft and light, warm, and feels great on your skin.
Nursing Camisoles. These simple and useful camis have a v-neck design, no snaps or clasps. I wore this daily for a year!
Fleece Slippers. Soft, warm, comfy faux fur booties are a nice gift for a new mom as she returns from the hospital. Perfect for many hours spent nursing, in a glider, and walking/bouncing baby especially at night.
Tip: Look for Nursing Clothes Guide and Post Pregnancy sections under Maternity Clothing websites!
Have their names and contact information available. If need be, an at-home visit is a phone call away.
Help With Day-to-Day Tasks
Aw, those first days and weeks of a newborn’s life. Attention will be hyper-focused on the baby and everyday tasks sometimes fall by the wayside.
If a new mom is recovering from surgery or particularly difficult labor, she is trying to heal physically- and simultaneously- take care of a newborn.
These are helpful gifts I recommend for a new mom that will be so appreciated in those first few weeks!
Dog-Walker. Research a highly recommended dog-walker and gift a week or two of walks for the family dog. Keeping up the daily walk routine can help the dog’s stress level in those first few weeks when new parents are unable to do it.
Homemade Meal. Nothing is better than a homemade meal; it is easy to make ahead of time and freeze until needed. A healthy, yummy casserole baking in the oven can make all the difference when new parents are hungry and sleep-deprived.
Purchase an E-Gift Card from Blue Apron. Gift any amount that you’d like, applicable towards weekly recurring deliveries on any meal plan. Popular amounts are $60, $120, or $240 but can be custom, too.
SceneSwitch LED light bulbs. These light bulbs have 3 color temperature settings [within one bulb] and work with any existing lamp. The third setting is described as a “cozy warm glow”, and is similar to an amber night light or candlelight. This is a cost-effective gift; purchase a pack so lighting can be adjustable in all rooms to be either soft white, daylight, or warm glow.
Being aware of color temperature and intensity of brightness help when establishing the day and night routines for baby; circadian lighting systems are new to the average consumer but could be a really creative gift!
Sound machine. A sound machine is definitely needed and calming! Part of creating a soothing environment for a newborn is adding white noise or nature sounds to the background for nursing, napping, and sleep. This sound machine can be used for years- as the baby grows into a toddler- and has a color-changing night light as well!
Indoor Thermometer with Humidity Gauge is a tech-essential for baby’s nursery or sleeping area. This highly rated gauge is a must-have when monitoring the temperature of baby’s sleeping area.
A portable lounger for a newborn is an amazing gift that can “hug” and comfort baby in a safe space, freeing up a new mom for a few moments so she can shower, eat, read, or rest. (while supervising her baby in it, of course)
I didn’t know about this product for months, I wish I would have. Recommended for babies 0-9 months, I recommend the organic option since baby’s skin will have direct contact with the fabric.
Comfortable Newborn Basics and Swaddles
There is nothing easier to give as a gift than apparel basics and swaddles for a newborn. A new mom will need multiple sets of baby clothing that can be mixed and matched easily. She can’t have too many swaddles, either!
I recommend organic options for these gifts, since conventional cotton may contain toxins that can irritate baby’s skin and reside in fabric long after washes.
There are so many creative and thoughtful ways to support a new mom. You can give a gift that is sure to be useful and needed.
Gift ideas for a new mom shouldn’t be complicated. With a little insight and intention, you can choose a perfect gift that will be so appreciated! These ideas have been tried and tested!
