What To Look For in a Butcher

When it comes to finding butchers in Las Vegas and Henderson that work for your family’s needs, it’s important to know what to look for.

Everyone’s dietary concerns and needs are different but if you are family that prefers some form of beef or meat often during their monthly meals, trying out your local butcher shop can be a great option. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Quality of Meat

Everyone’s version of quality is different and for my personal taste I prefer a lean cut of meat – moderate marbling is great. But the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) has a few distinctions:

  • Prime Beef: generally sold in restaurants and hotels. Prime roasts and steaks are excellent for dry-heat cooking such as broiling, roasting or grilling.
  • Choice Beef: Choice roasts and steaks from the loin and rib will be very tender, juicy, and flavorful and are suited for dry-heat cooking.
  • Select Beef: It is fairly tender, but, because it has less marbling, it may lack some of the juiciness and flavor of the higher grades.

Local Proximity

With these cattle ranches being close to Las Vegas and Henderson it’s comforting knowing that your meat is relatively locally sourced (Wells, Ely, Carson Valley). If you prefer to shop online, I love that you can support local Nevada families that have farms and ranches in Northern Nevada as well.

Learning Opportunity

As a mom to young kids there lots of talk about how vegetables help our body grow, how our body uses fruits and we’ve realized understanding the role of protein and meat in our meal is important too.

So let’s move along to information on a few butchers in Las Vegas, cattle ranches, their subscription options and how it may fit into your family’s routine!
