Thank you to Dr. Kaitlyn Shikada of Family First Chiropractic for sponsoring this post on chiropractic care for infants. As always, all opinions are our own. Read our disclosure.
If you’re a parent, you may have thought about how chiropractic care can help your infants and young children. Too many people are still largely unaware of the benefits a chiropractor for infants can be.
We invited Dr. Kaitlyn Shikada of Family First Chiropractic to answer some of the most commonly asked questions from parents, explain what can be expected during a newborn chiropractic appointment, and discuss why chiropractic can be so beneficial to an infant’s long-term health and more.
Chiropractor for Infants Q & A
Q: What do you wish every parent knew about chiropractic?
A: A common misperception about chiropractic is that it only addresses the spine for pain relief.
The truth is, nervous system-based chiropractors, do so much more. The nervous system controls and coordinates the development and function of every single organ, tissue, and cell in the body. It is the first system that develops in utero because it is necessary to bring life to every part of a growing human.
As chiropractors, we honor the body’s innate healing intelligence and seek to help each individual process through patterns that are interfering with that expression of health. If you want healthy children, an optimally functioning nervous system is critical to that.
The benefits of going to a chiropractor for infants are limitless and can truly put them on a completely different trajectory for their life. It is much easier to build strong and healthy kids than to fix sick adults.
Q: What does a chiropractic appointment with an infant entail?
A: Chiropractic care starts from the first phone call to our office. During the first visit in our office, we get a good understanding of the patient’s pregnancy and birth history, abnormal stressors, and developmental milestones.
We listen and care because it all matters. We do a specific neurologic examination, test reflexes, and use technology to measure the function of the nervous system.
After putting all of this together, we create an individualized care plan to address your goals specifically as a chiropractor for infants. Chiropractic adjustments bring ease to the nervous system with about the same amount of pressure you would use to check the ripeness of an avocado. They are specific, gentle, and effective.
Q: Are there specific symptoms of signs parents should look for, and consider chiropractic as a solution?
A: The nervous system creates the foundational blueprint for a child’s health and controls all other systems.
Interference in the communication of development can show up as abnormal functions such as breastfeeding challenges, colic, constipation, ear infections, failure to thrive, sensory processing disorders, chronic sickness, sleep issues, bedwetting, and many other common symptoms.
Children do not just “grow out of it”.
These are patterns that their systems will grow into, with massive potential to create sickness and disease later in life. Chiropractic adjustments can help the nervous system to integrate the different stressors their nervous system has encountered and allow them to grow and develop more healthily.
This principle of nature and physiology is in fact why many chiropractors choose their profession.
Q: When, or how young, should an infant visit the chiropractor?
A: Ideally, shortly after birth so that patterns of interference in their nervous system can be assessed and function be restored.
Making an appointment with a chiropractor for infants is crucial during their first year of life. Why is this?
Did you know that 65% of neurologic development happens in the first year of life? So if the goal is to be preventative and promote health from as early as possible, the next best time is today. If they already have signs of dysfunction, it is even more important to get them checked as soon as possible.
Q: What else do you want parents to keep in mind when it comes to chiropractic for infants?
A: Health is not an absence of symptoms and pain, it is the ability to adapt properly to the stressors of life (physical, chemical, mental/emotional). That being the case, it is critical that the nervous system is always functioning optimally, especially during the period that it is developing the most: infancy.
Your Go-To Chiropractor for Infants
At Family First Chiropractic, we have seen so many of these symptoms and more resolve, and be prevented in the kiddos under our care.
If there were physical or mental/emotional stressors during pregnancy, birth intervention, or if your child is already showing signs of nervous system interference, get them checked by a pediatric chiropractor as soon as possible.
Instead of waiting for the process of symptoms and sickness to set in, we encourage parents to have their newborns checked so that they can develop and function at their best, expressing health and healing as early as possible.
