The Buzz and Benefits of B12

As a mom, we are always looking for more ways to keep up with our littles. A healthy diet, regular exercise, and consistent sleep are all ways to keep your energy up.  But what if that is not enough? This article will dive deeper into the benefits of B12 vitamin injections and if they may be right to add to your health routine.

If you’re anything like me, I’m always in need of more energy, better sleep, less of an internal “hunger monster” who wants to snack on everything, and more pep in my step.

What is B12 and Why Do We Need It?

B12 Vitamin, also known as cobalamin, is an essential vitamin that your body needs but cannot produce.

It’s found naturally in animal products but also added to certain foods and available as an injection, infusion, or oral supplement.

B12 Vitamin has many roles in your body. It supports the normal function of your nerve cells and is needed for red blood cell formation and DNA synthesis. There are so many benefits of B12.

Signs of B12 Deficiency

Your Primary Care Physician can run complete labs to check if you are B12 deficient.

However, if you are experiencing some of the following signs and symptoms, you may benefit from B12 injections:

  • decreased cognitive function, such as issues with memory or understanding (I sometimes call this “brain farts”)
  • fatigue
  • lethargy
  • feeling faint
  • depression or irritability
  • anxiety
  • headaches
  • difficulty maintaining balance
  • sore, swollen tongue, which may be pale yellow or very red
  • pale skin
  • heart palpitations
  • constipation
  • difficulty staying asleep
  • paresthesia (pins and needles)
  • vision changes

Injection vs. Supplements vs. Infusions

There are many ways to increase your B12 levels.  This article (and my personal experience) is with B12 shots/injections.

B12 Vitamin Injections are the most common way to prevent or treat a deficiency. The injections (or shots) are given intramuscularly — into the muscle (or in most cases your back hip/thigh). Because the injection takes place in a muscular/fatty area pain is minimal to non-existent.

B12 Supplements are important to add to your health routine if shots are not an option.

Simone notes, “Make sure you purchase B12 supplements as methylcobalamin or methyl-B12. This is the most absorbable form of B12 for your body.”

B12 Infusions provide vitamins through an IV in the arm connected to a bag of fluid. This is a good option for those who feel very unwell.

Benefits of B12

Vitamin B12 may benefit your body in amazing ways, such as boosting your energy, improving your memory and helping prevent heart disease.

Simone explains, “Benefits of B12 include helping with energy, red cell production, increase in serotonin (the chemical nerve in charge of happiness), and melatonin regulation.”

B12 helps your body produce the sleep hormone that keeps the body rested and healthy. It also helps the methylation cycle that detoxes the body.

“Probably my favorite benefit of B12 shots is mental clarity.  It clears up brain fog,” stated Simone.

Injections on a Regular Basis

Regular B12 injections have also shown to have the following effects:

  • Increases your energy levels & fights fatigue
  • Improves your metabolism
  • Supports weight loss
  • Helps improve sleeping patterns & circadian rhythm

Who Should Take B12?

Both men and women benefit from B12 injections.

Did you know that the daily medications we take can inhibit your natural ability to breakdown B12 or actively deplete B12 levels?

“Anyone prescribed metformin or is taking antacids (prescribed or over the counter) should be supplementing with B12,” stated Simone.

Those who are anemic will also benefit from B12, as it helps the body make red blood cells.

Keeping Our Kids Healthy

The B12 Vitamin is important for all of us, especially our children.  As mentioned earlier, B12 is important for central nervous system function, forming red blood cells, and turning the food they eat into energy.

One study concluded that B12 deficiency can contribute to poor growth. It is important to note that B12 injections are not necessary for children.

The B12 vitamin is available mainly in animal foods. It is also added to some fortified foods, such as cereal, milk (dairy and plant-based), and soy products. Dairy products and eggs contain significant levels of B12 as well.

Pregnancy is Hard, B12 Helps

As I mentioned earlier, I received weekly B12 shots throughout my entire pregnancy. The regular injections supported my changing body and mood.

B12 does not have a tolerable upper intake level. This means that you are unlikely to experience negative side effects from the vitamin, even when you take large amounts of it.

Because of this, B12 injections are safe during pregnancy. In fact, if you are deficient in the vitamin, it may be riskier not to get this extra supplementation.

Simone also reminds that the other “B Vitamin” that is very important for pregnant women is B9, which is commonly called Folic Acid.

“Check your prenatal vitamins for B9 as methyl folate. Folic Acid is not a desirable form of B9, so make sure your supplement is taken in the methylated form,” stated Simone.

If you have specific questions or concerns about getting these injections during pregnancy, talk to your obstetrician.

B12 and Baby

In addition to helping Mama, regular B12 injections during pregnancy can help your baby while they’re growing.

According to the World Health Organization, the B12 vitamin is just as important in preventing neural tubes and other neurological defects in infants. Unfortunately, as many as 1 in 20 adults are deficient in this essential vitamin.

Regular B12 injections can help to prevent spina bifida and other spinal and central nervous system birth defects in your baby during development.

A B12 deficiency is associated with increased risk for several adverse pregnancy outcomes for both mother and fetus.

Per the World Health Organization, these risks include neural tube defects, intrauterine growth retardation, preeclampsia, and early miscarriage.

How Often Should You Get Injected

When beginning B12 vitamin shots for the first time, it is recommended that you try weekly injections for 4 consecutive weeks. At that point, you should begin to get to that “sweet spot” where you have sustained energy every day, and don’t feel like you need a nap.

You will notice that you sleep through the night and wake up feeling like you’re ready to get out of bed, with no desire to hit the snooze button.

During this 4-week period, Simone encourages you to listen to your body, “You feel the energy and you can also detect when the vitamins start to wear off. You will be a pro at knowing when your body needs an additional boost.”

From my personal experience, you will absolutely know when you need a shot.  I have it scheduled into my weekly calendar, but if life gets busy and I miss an injection, I feel like I’ve lost the pep in my step.

Infrared Sauna: Removing Toxins

As I started this journey, I began by detoxing my system from environmental toxins that are part of all our daily lives.

I began supplementing with nutrients that supported detox and nourished my body. I continue to do this periodically, especially after indulging over the holidays.

Simone notes, “It is nice to rotate through different combinations for well-rounded supplementation.”

Average Costs

While costs vary at each location, the average cost per B12 injection is about $25. Most places offer “shot packages” where you can buy multiple treatments at one time, and a discount is often applied. I usually buy an 8-shot-package to keep myself accountable.
