Review: Walmart Grocery Pickup + $10 Off Your First Order

I’ve been using Walmart Grocery Pick Up for the last three years, and it is LIFE CHANGING! I’m sharing what I’ve learned about grocery pickup and some tips along the way in this Walmart Grocery Pickup review.

Online Grocery Shopping: Everything You Never Knew You Needed

Grocery shopping is not a particularly difficult task. Before I had kids I would go to the grocery store daily to pick up ingredients for dinner. I enjoyed perusing the aisles looking for new products and finding good deals. I would write out shopping lists and compare brands.

Now that I have three kids under 8, my shopping trips have turned into my most chaotic chore. I think most moms have suffered through a shopping trip with crying babies and cranky kids.

It’s hard to focus on what you need to buy for dinner when one kid needs to go to the bathroom, another is whining for a box of Fruit Loops because it has Minions on it and the third keeps kicking off their shoe.

Today I want to share my review and tips for using Walmart Grocery Pick Up.

How It Works

Options: Walmart offers curbside pickup or delivery. You order online and schedule a pickup time.

Minimum: $30

Fee: Curbside pickup is free,  Delivery fee is $7.00

Payment: Pay online at the time of order

My Tips

This Walmart Grocery Pickup review wouldn’t be complete without some tips! Here is what I’ve learned:

Utilize the “Reorder” Option

The Walmart Grocery app is easy to use right on your phone. Just select your store location, reserve a time slot for pick up, and add items to your cart.

I use the “Reorder Your Essentials” section the most because I can quickly click through and select my favorite items that I need each week like, milk, fruit, and snacks.

Allow Substitutions

I always select to allow substitutions. Sometimes Walmart is out of the exact item I want, but they will substitute or even upgrade to a better item at no extra charge. One time I received a bulk box of 48 coffee K-cups for the price of the 12 count box that I originally ordered.

Stick To A Budget

When I grocery shop from home I stick to my list and budget much closer. I avoid impulse buys like the bakery goods and the sugary snacks that the kids always beg for.

I also can spend more time exploring the rollback sales and make smarter purchases for things we actually need instead of junk that sounds good at the time.

I usually have a rough grocery list, but ordering online makes it much easier for me to only purchase what I need. I can pull up recipes for the week and make sure I don’t forget any ingredients or buy things I already have in the pantry.

Our family of five tries to keep the weekly grocery budget somewhere between $125- $150. I’ve found that when I use Walmart Grocery Pickup, I spend less and actually get the items I need.

Pick Up Is Easy

The app notifies me when my order is ready for pick up. I simply check-in before I leave the house and the app alerts the store that I’m on my way.

The parking spots are numbered, and there is a phone number to call in case you aren’t using the mobile app to check-in.

This is my favorite part of the trip. I don’t have to unbuckle the kids from their car seats, find a cart or navigate the aisles of a busy store. We stay warm and comfy in the minivan, listening to music while we wait for our grocery order to come to us.

Sometimes I even place the order, and then my husband or my mom will pick up the groceries.

My debit card is tied to the app, so they just need to call the number and let the employees know they are picking up order under my name.

I have only had great experiences with the Walmart employees who bring out the orders. They are polite, efficient and friendly. They always ask if I’ve reviewed my substitutions. (You can approve or reject the substitution if you don’t like it.)

Then you sign for the order, and the employee loads the groceries into my car.

A Few Drawbacks to Walmart Grocery Pickup

Plastic Bags

I don’t love that Walmart uses SO MANY plastic bags when bagging up the orders.

However, I recently learned that you can request no plastic bags in the Notes section of the app. I am definitely going to try it out on my next order.

Some Limitations

Walmart Grocery Pickup does limit the items you are able to purchase through the app. You can’t buy some things like alcohol, clothing, electronics or plants.

Basically, if it’s on the app, you can order it, but it’s not guaranteed to be in stock.

A few times I’ve ordered a specific size and brand of diapers, and they couldn’t fulfill it and did not offer a substitution.

I have talked to some people who were worried about doing grocery pick up because they wouldn’t be able to choose their own meats or pick out perfectly ripe produce.

Picky?

While I do enjoy looking at the seasonal produce, I have not had any issues with the online grocery shoppers giving me bad or expired food.

In my experience, the produce has been perfect and the meat is no different than I would have chosen. If you are particularly picky, Walmart Grocery Pick Up may not be for you.

However, I think it’s worth it for the convenience factor alone!

Customer Service

Contacting Walmart customer service is easy, but I always have a fear that they won’t believe me. A few times I’ve returned home with my groceries to discover that I’m missing an item or was charged incorrectly.

I simply contact the local number listed on the app. I’m routed through to a customer service representative who views my account with my cell phone number.

Both times I’ve called, I spent less than a minute on hold. The rep was able to issue me a refund, no questions asked.

There is also an option on the app to report an item issue if it is damaged, missing, you don’t like the substitution, poor quality or past expiration.

Grocery Shop and Chill

I occasionally step foot inside an actual grocery store, but for weekly grocery shopping, I definitely prefer Walmart Grocery Pickup.

It saves me time, money and stress. I like being able to place my order from home when I can stand in my kitchen and see exactly what I need.
